THE SKID STEER CONCEPT
The term "skid-steer" refers to the loader's unique
steering system, which allows it to turn 360-degrees
within its own length (A). This four-wheel drive
machine has a fixed frame, with both wheels on one side
turning together independently of the wheels on the
opposite side of the loader. A longer wheelbase
(B) is also available, offering a smoother ride and more
lift capacity. For jobs that require a lot of
lifting, a vertical lift patch with longer wheelbase (C)
carries heavy loads high and provides a long reach -
perfect for loading trucks or placing pallets.

In place of a
conventional steering wheel, the operator has two hand
levers: by pulling one steering lever backward and
pushing the other forward, the wheels counter-rotate and
the loader pivots. The loader is designed to the
lighter end (such as an empty bucket) skid about the
heavier end; when the bucket is loaded, the rear skids
about the front. This extreme maneuverability
allows the skid-steer loader to work in the tightest
quarters and greatly improves cycle times over
conventional wheeled loaders and tractors. |
